Panayoti Karousos is a renowned Greek-Canadian composer who brings to his music the philosophy and spiritualism of the Greek classics. He structures his works around Pythagorean mathematical forms and infuses them with modern styles such as those of Wagner, amongst others. The majestic sound of his work, The Spirit of Liberty, caused critics to acclaim it as a second national anthem of Greece. It was presented in Canada and New York with great success. The Olympic Symphony is comprised of 12 Homeric Hymns dedicated to the Gods of Olympus and is sung in Ancient Greek.
Karousos also presented his operas Prometheus, Olympic Flame, Alexander the Great and the oratorio The Song of the Nations in Canada which garnered him rave reviews. The Piano Concerto for Peace was presented with pianist Nathalie Joncas under UNESCOs auspices. This piece was highlighted by the Montreal Popular Concerts series in Montreal’s Maurice Richard Arena to an audience of 5000 people.
The Piano Concerto became the soundtrack to filmmaker Jenna Constantine's movie If Aphrodite Had Arms. Karousos’ works are featured in the Vassilios Chrissochos’ action-adventure-comedy film Attila Attacks!
Panayoti Karousos presented his symphonic poems Eternal Parthenon, Time Melody, and Democracy’s Feast, with the Astoria Symphony, the FACE Symphony Orchestra, the OSJL-L Symphony Orchestra and the Monteregie Symphony Orchestra under the direction of maestros Andre Gauthier, Theodora Stathopoulos, Luc Chaput and Silas Nathaniel Huff. Panayoti Karousos chamber music is different from the romanticism of his operas and symphonic works. The Piano Trios and the Violin and Cello Sonatas presented in Beverly Hills City Hall and around Montreal surprised the public with their melancholy nature and strong harmonic complexity.
Panayoti Karousos started his career as a baritone accompanied by renowned pianist of the Opera de Montreal, Claudette Denys. The composer even impressed Patriarch Bartholomew with his performance in his 1998’s Canadian farewell diner at Palace, Montreal. As a singer and composer he collaborated with the Archbishop of Toronto Canada, Sotirios, in a 3 CD album named Greek Orthodox Catechism.
His album Grece Pays d’Amour got the award for Best Classical Recording in 2002/03 from the Toronto Radio Acropolis Awards. Panayoti Karousos is a recipient of honors from the Federal Canadian Government, the Quebec Provincial Government and the City of Montreal. The chorus part from the Olympic Flame was presented among other works with the Symphony Orchestra and the Choir of Gunst wat'n Kunst at Hague, Holland, with maestro Rafael Pylarinos. Panayoti Karousos Violin Concerto was presented at the Concert for Religious Freedom hosted by the Federation of Hellenic Societies in New York, under the direction of maestro Grant Gilman. Most recently the World Premiere of his opera Alexander the Great presented in Montreal with great success.

Panayoti Karousos est un compositeur d’origine grecque installé depuis 1990 à Montréal où il a poursuivi ses études musicales aux Universités de Montréal et McGill. Il a fait une carrière en tant que baryton soliste, participant à de nombreux événements importants à Montréal comme la visite officielle du PatriarcheŒcuménique Bartholomé au Canada en 1998. La collaboration de M. Karousos avec l’Église Orthodoxe du Canada fut couronnée avec un CD intitulé Orthodoxe Cathecism, consacré aux œuvres de l’Archevêque du Canada, Mgr Sotirios.
M. Karousos a présenté son opéra Prométhée, premier volet de sa Tétralogie Hellénique, à la Place des Arts de Montréal, avec traduction française du Professeur Jacques Bouchard, et la collaboration de grands artistes tels que la basse Joseph Rouleau et la pianiste Claudette Denys. Basé sur la tragédie d’Eschyle, Prométhée enchaîné, c’est une œuvre d’un lyrisme profond qui réfère à la tradition du théâtre antique.
L’opéra La Flamme Olympique, deuxième volet de cette Tétralogie de transformation du feu, fut présenté a la Basilique Notre-Dame de Montréal. Cette œuvre s’ouvre sur la majestueuse scène de l’Inauguration des Jeux Olympiques par Héraclès. Dans le duo de la Libération de Prométhée par Héraclès, elle plonge au plus profond de l’angoisse existentielle de l’humanité dans sa relation avec le divin. Le caractère méditatif de la musique atteint son apogée avec la paraphrase de la tragédie de Sophocle, les Trachiniennes.
Le troisième volet de la Tétralogie Hellénique met en scène un nouveau géant de l’épopée humaine, Alexandre le Grand. Dans son destin unique, Alexandre va apporter au monde entier le feu de la civilisation de Prométhée. Avec l’avènement de l’Ère hellénistique « la table est mise » pour la venue du nouveau messie, Jésus. L’opéra épique Alexandre le Grand est un œuvre monumentale, écrite à la mesure de son sujet.
Outre ses opéras, Panayoti Karousos a composé de nombreuses œuvres de musique classique. Son Concerto de piano a été créé à l’arena Maurice Richard de Montréal avec, comme soliste, Nathalie Joncas, et son Concerto de violon à New York avec Leo Adamov. Son oratorio The Song of the Nations ainsi que sa Symphonie Olympique ont été présentés sous la baguette du Chef André Gauthier. Son poème symphonique Esprit de Liberté a été donné en 2000 à Montréal en présence de l’Honorable Pierre E. Trudeau, puis en 2006 à New York avec grand succès, Maestro Silas Nathaniel Huff dirigeant l’Astoria Symphony Orchestra. La musique de chambre de Panayoti Karousos a été présentée au Beverly Hills City Hall, à Los Angeles. D’autre part, Maestro Rafael Pylarinos a dirigé La Flamme Olympique en concert avec l’orchestre et le chœur Gunst wat’n Kunst, à La Haie, en Hollande, en mars 2007. Dans un concert pour la liberté des religions donné à New York en Avril 2007, Maestro Grant Gilman a dirigé des extraits des œuvres de P. Karousos avec l’Orchestre Américain et des solistes.
