Subject: Ukraine POWs In Hempton Green Camp Norfolk IP: Logged
Message: Does anyone know the contacts for any Ukrainian prisoners of war held in Camp 82 at Hempton Green Norfolk in the latter years of World War 2.
It is likely that most men were members of the 14th Waffen Grenadier of the SS Galizien (1st Ukrainian) who had been compulsorily drafted into the German Army with the objective of fighting the Red Army. It is understood that Camp 82 in Norfolk held Italian POWs in the early years of the war, but later held German POWs after the withdrawal of Italy from the war.
A beautiful rood screen was carved by one of the Ukrainians for the local church in Hempton, namely Holy Trinity Church. It is probable therefore that the soldier who carved the rood it was from Western Ukraine and a Ukrainian catholic or "uniate".
Does anyone know any more than this, as this year (2006) the church is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its foundation in 1856, and we would like to be able to get in touch with the family of the person who carved the rood.
