It was Larry’s fault.

Because somewhere in casual conversation he’d asked how long they’d known each other. But she knew, he was really asking how long they’d loved each other. She could hear it in his voice. The way he blinked at her with a half smile, his eyes fleeting towards Toby’s retreating back.

“Forever and a day.” She murmured softly, dropping her paperwork to the conference table with a huff. She wasn’t in the mood to deal with the indecisive and emotionally wounded Tobias. He was being far too…contradictory for any of them to get anything done.

“He’s upset about the Bill.” Larry waved it off with a warm and supposedly supportive smile. His voice hailing the failed Veteran’s Bill they’d worked their asses off for.

CJ just shrugged, knowing it wasn’t just about the bill. It was about Toby and the way he wanted everything to fit perfectly into one second. The way he compartmentalized his job, trying to keep one thing straight and divided from another.

She shook her head, moving towards the door, “He’s just upset.”

“Isn’t that Toby?”

She smirked back to the other man, holding the door ajar as she spoke, “Isn’t that all of us?”

“Larry thinks you’re pissed about the Bill.”

He sighed softly, drawing his office closed unto himself, locking her in with the click of the door. His shoulders dropped a bit and he slid into the office, eyes washing over the low lit room. They’d worked too long, dragging the day away for something that was never gonna work.

They all knew.

“I am.”

She smiled, her hand catching his arm, “It’s not just the Bill.”

“It’s not.” He agreed, his eyes glancing to her fingers, studying the way they curled around his cotton shirt. He watched her fingers smooth the fabric, and he smiled when they moved towards his jaw.

“It’s today.” She added softly.

Toby sighed again, “It is.”

His admission was lined like a paragraph, the subject matter – his emotions. His face told her that she was right, and his words just dropped truth between them. CJ leaned in a little closer, pushing a soft kiss to his cheek, her eyes blinking shut while he sighed into her.

“It’ll be over tomorrow.” She murmured softly, “I promise.”

He smiled warmly, “I believe you.”

Because somewhere he knew she was wrong – it wouldn’t be over the next day.

But somewhere – he really did believe her.

And he knew it would be over.
