'Tis the season to be jolly...
![[Merry Xmas!]](xmasb1.gif)
The Samaritans organisation reports that suicide rates
peak at Xmas. For some the Xmas season focuses the mind on personal worries,
loneliness or money problems. It can also raise unrealistic expectations of
enjoyment of the festivities as there is greater pressure at Xmas to have
a marvellous time because of tradition, advertising and the media.
The seasonal custom of increased alcohol consumption can affect perception and may also increase
depression. So, if ever you contemplate suicide because you think that everyone is having
a better time than you are at Xmas then don't... because we're probably not.
Instead go and talk to somebody and tell them how you feel - a friend, relative, neighbour, teacher, doctor, priest, policeman or social worker. Or phone The Samaritans or Childline or the phone operator. The numbers are in the phone book.
