The Future of the Transcription Service - 22 June 2001

By Marbract Services

We had a meeting with the Registry on Friday 22 June, at which the future of the Transcription Service was discussed. There was overwhelming support for the long-term continuation of the service from Family History Groups and a recognition from the Registry that the service provides them with an additional way to meet client needs.

In the short term, it was agreed that everyone would welcome an arrangement whereby the Transcription Agents could continue to provide their services either by having access to the scanned images at the Registry, or by having access to the archived registers.

Alison Morgan, the Acting Registrar, has undertaken to investigate the possibility of putting such an arrangement in place. While there is no guarantee that access can be facilitated, it appeared that every effort would be made to have this happen. We were told that we would be advised within 2 weeks whether or not such a short term arrangement could be made. I am therefore hopeful that we will once again have access to the deaths but it could be a few weeks before it actually happens. Please keep an eye on our website where we will continue to advise clients of developments regarding this matter.

PS - We were also told at the meeting that the Marriage registers are due to be removed and sent to the archive sometime in July 2001.

On 30 Oct 1831 Summerland STANIFORD (1796 -1856 ) son of John STANIFORD and Elizabeth KIRSOP married Lydia CHAPPLE daughter of Thomas CHAPPLE and Lucretia Hunt PITFIELD in Axminster, Devon, England. They had 7 children all born in Plymouth -Nathaniel, Lydia Pitfield, Eliza, Mary Ann, Lucretia, Emma and Summerland.

Summerland and his family, except for Nathaniel, sailed from Plymouth on 04 April 1851 on the "Candahar" and arrived at Port Adelaide on 02 Dec 1851. Nathaniel had apparently come to Australia some 12 months earlier.

Where: Uniting Church Hall, Main Road, Summertown.

Time: 2:00 to about 5:00.

Cyndi's List - The Book - Second Edition"Genealogical Publishing Company is proud to announce that the all-new Second Edition of Cyndi's List--THE BOOK is now available. Twice the size of the first edition (two big volumes instead of one!), Cyndi's List will help you prepare in advance for the time you spend doing your research online and, of course, will enable you to save money if you pay for your Internet connection by the minute. If you're accustomed to doing your research at a library or Family History Center terminal, you'll now be able to spend your limited time online in a productive manner by pre-screening the sites you want to visit. With the sudden and explosive growth of genealogy on the Internet, the possibilities for research have become almost endless, but Cyndi's List allows you to impose some useful controls on this exciting new phenomenon, turning the vast body of data on the Internet into a manageable research tool, one you can feel, touch, and read even when the power is turned off."

Editors note: Have you bought this book? If so, leave a comment to tell other Australian genealogists what it is like? Did you buy it direct from USA or locally? Has it been of any help to your research? Leave a comment and tell us.

Yes, those animated Simpsons have their ancestry researched. I found this site and thought it would be a fun one to show the children/grandchildren.

2/19th BATTALION, AUSTRALIAN IMPERIAL FORCES, WWII

by Bob Middleton rhmassociates@idx.com.au

I am compiling a database for all original members, Singapore Reinforcements, or anybody who was a member of the Australian Army's 2/19th Battalion during WWII. Did your grandfather, father, brother, cousin belong to this illustrious group of men who fought the Japanese army down the Malayan Peninsula until they were surrendered and became POWs? If you have information, I would only be too pleased to receive copies (papers, dairies, photos, anecdotes, etc.)

My interest lies in the fact that my uncle, Douglas Lindsay Cameron Middleton, was a member of this unit and did not survive the fighting on Singapore Island. I recently was able to photograph the grave markers for those who died as POWs in Borneo and who had known graves. These photographs can be seen at http://www.geocities.com/second19th/links.html along with other information on members that would be of interest to genealogists.
