FFHS-NEWS FFHS Web Award 2002
Sun, 8 Sep 2002, Coventry, England, The Federation of Family History Societies has announced the results of the FFHS Web Award for 2002.
Newly introduced in 2001, in recognition of the growing importance of the media, this is awarded annually to the member society that publishes and maintains the best web site. The winning society receives £100, kindly donated as an annual award by Family Tree Magazine. Both the winner and the runners-up are able to display the FFHS Web Award emblem on their web sites.
The judging panel looks for a site whose web-pages are useful, clear and attractive to members, non-members, outsiders, those who happen on the pages by searching, or by links from other web sites. They should make it clear what the Society provides and pages should be integrated with other sites - having relevant links to GENUKI, record offices, libraries, etc, relevant to the Society.
It is possible to win an award for a clear and well-designed web site achieved with limited resources. There is a preference for web sites that can be read using a variety of browsers, adhere to HTML standards, and are accessible to all.
The results are:
WINNER: South Cheshire FHS (webmaster Ian Hartas)
RUNNER UP: Birmingham & Midland SGH
HIGHLY COMMENDED
Essex FHS
East of London FHS
Guild of One- Name Studies
Manchester & Lancashire FHS
COMMENDED
Queensland FHS Inc
Cambridgeshire FHS
Hertfordshire FHS
Huntingdonshire FHS
The following five in particular deserve an "honourable mention":
Devon FHS
East Surrey FHS
Sheffield & District FHS
Watkins Society
Weston Super Mare FHS
Geoff Riggs, FFHS Webmaster says "I'm extremely grateful to the four judges who each devoted considerable time and effort in assessing every web-site that had been entered, and then re-assessing the top six to ensure there was agreement on the final placings."
Unfortunately, because of a clash of engagements, South Cheshire FHS were unable to be presented with the Award at the General Meeting, together with the £100 cheque for their society very kindly donated by Family Tree Magazine. Arrangements are being made for the presentation to take place instead at the SoG's Family History Experience weekend at Stoneleigh at the end of the month, when Birmingham & Midland SGH will also receive their Runner Up certificate.
