| I have
received many emails regarding my Christianity and my
support for Al Gore. Most call me a baby-killer. This one
was the nicest, so I responded. Portions of the email
exchange found below. One email I received: Hi, I found your site as I was looking for Christian clip-art for my web-site. I noticed you had some pro-Al Gore angels. I am not a disagreeable person, I just wonder why you would want him for president? As a Christian, he stands for almost everything un-Christ-like. Unless I am mistaken, you are also Catholic. How can you agree with his stand on abortion? I know by now you have made up your mind, I just don't understand, I guess. Well, I hope you have a good day and I'm sorry if I upset you. And some of my responses to those who also wrote: Hello and Greetings! People with reasonable questions never upset me. Yes, I am Catholic, and yes, I support Gore. I do this for several reasons: 1) I am not a single-issue voter. I am COMPLETELY against abortion, unless the life of the mother is at risk, in which case there is no point in two people dying. But there are also other faiths that do not believe as I do. Some faiths do not think life begins at conception. So, who am I to tell someone else what to believe? I do believe in the Bill of Rights and what it says about the government not showing favoritism to one religion over another. I believe strongly in separation of church and state. 2) I disagree with Al Gore on more than just the abortion issue. I do not believe in the death penalty, either. I do not believe that anyone ever has the right to take a life--even to save one's own life. But then, that is just my opinion. 3) I do not see Al Gore as an immoral man. As far as I know, he was not in the Oval Office with Clinton and Lewinsky, I don't think he was associated with Genifer Flowers, and I do not believe he ever met Paula Jones. I also do not understand why he gets blamed for these things. I mean, if your boss cheated on his wife, what would you do about it? 4) I believe very strongly that Jesus wants us to take care of one another. I believe that when we give someone else something to eat, we are giving to the Lord. When we give someone else something to drink, we are giving to the Lord. I feel the same way about health care and education. We need to take better care of each other in this country. And helping people is the right thing to do. 5) I believe that the Lord made us stewards of His planet, Earth. That means we need to take care of it, but also use it's resources to prosper ourselves. I have seen Al Gore speak in person on environmental issues. He is NOT the "tree hugger" he is painted to be. He has ideas that will both strengthen the economy and clean up the environment. For example, you can clean used motor oil and reuse it. In doing so, oil that would be dumped into the ground to pollute is cleaned and reused. This also creates new jobs. 6) I do not think that a tax cut or rebate is a good idea right now. If gas prices continue to go up, then maybe it will be. But right now, we need to use the surplus to pay off the national debt. 7) I also think Al Gore has more integrity than George Bush. Why? It has to do with Vietnam. I do not judge people on how they felt. Only on how they acted. Gore's father was against the war, but Al went anyway. Now, maybe he wasn't on the front lines--but a lot of people who were in the service at the time never went to the front lines. Bush, on the other hand, came from a family that strongly supported the war. And he sat it out in the National Guard. In fact, there is almost a year in his service record that is unaccounted for. If Bush supported the war, he should have volunteered for Vietnam. I believe Bush to be a man who will let someone else go to die for his beliefs, but will not go himself. 8) I believe that Gore is smarter than Bush. I mean, intelligent. I have seen Gore speak in person and he makes a very good impression. He is not as stiff as he comes across on TV. He is a very personable and likeable man in person. I also know people who have met Bush. They tell me that he is a very, very, very nice guy. But that he is not very smart, and that they fear for this country if he ever had to negotiate anything with a foreign power. 9) I also do not think Bush is as compassionate as he claims. He has allowed more executions in his term of office than any other governor--even when there has been great doubt about the convict's guilt. A compassionate person would insist on DNA testing BEFORE it became a campaign issue and not after. Either he is not compassionate, or he doesn't think logically. Either way, for me, it boils down to Barbara Bush being the only member of that family I trust. Why am I against the death penalty? Because 2000 years ago Our Lord, Jesus Christ, was nailed to cross. That was an incredibly painful death. And He had the power to destroy his enemies with a mere thought. And He chose to die. Not only did He redeem our sins, He taught us how to treat those who harm us. I hope I have answered your question adaquately. I thank you for your email. Do write again if you have more questions. I just thought I would share the above email exchange. Maybe it will stop people from calling me a baby-killer. |
