"History Comes Full Circle" (EoFF)

Ten years after getting FF1 for the NES, my Wonderswan Color with Final Fantasy has arrived in the mail today!!!

It was the coolest package I've ever gotten, packed with Japanese newspapers.

The WSC is a tiny little thing, even smaller than the GBC.

The graphics reminded me a bit of Legend of Mana. There's 8 save slots. Attacks are now redirected. The invisible woman is now MIA. You can hold B to run like later FFs.

Can somebody translate this?

soubi nitsuite [ushi]bu hanashioshoyou kikitaifu?

(inside the brackets are katakana)

I'll share more later...

Dr Unne
01-19-2001 01:37 PM

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!! How could you get yours before I got mine?! I hate you!! I HATE YOU!! AAAARRRRRRGGGGGHH!!

Kawaii Ryuukishi
01-19-2001 01:47 PM

*pats Unne on the head* Now, now, at least you're getting it before most of us. I'm still waiting for the legit U.S. release. I can't be arsed to go blind by staring at window after window of text I can't understand.

Dr Unne
01-19-2001 01:49 PM

Express.com is going to get an email from me every day from now until they give me my FF1! The punks! *goes berserk*

EDIT: *bites kishi's hand*

Are you sure you translated the hiragana right for that? I can't find most of that stuff in my dictionary at all.

Collector
01-19-2001 01:56 PM

In case that may be your thought, I didn't get it from Express.com. I was upset about my order being cancelled and then the price being raised so I bought it off of eBay. That's why I got it so fast.

I'll give that message another look when I get back there. There's 4 old men in the inn that say it.

edit: More notes...
There's a lot more telling you what's going on. For example, you know when the enemies are alseep.
Have there always been werewolves in the Temple of Fiends? I don't remember.
The boss theme is a weird remix of the regular battle music.
There's a lot of cut scenes. As soon as you try to walk out of Coneria you are brought to the king.
edit again: More...
I love the way the White Mage looks when s/he swings the hammer.
The sleep spell is awesome.

Dr Unne
01-19-2001 02:18 PM

I think I figured some of that stuff out; the words are just grouped weirdly. If that first part is "soobi ni tsuite", it means "having turned on the machine(s)". "hanashi" means "a talk", and "hanashi o shooyu" might mean "have a talk". "kikitai" means "(I) want to ask" or "(I) want to listen/hear", depending on the context. I don't know who or what "ushi" is, though.

Are you sure about the "bu" and "fu" hiragana you have written there?

Collector
01-19-2001 02:30 PM

I'll be back to Coneria in a minute so I'll be able to double check.

edit: Okay, here's another try.

soubi nitsuite [ushibo] hanashioshiyou kikitai[ho]?

Seems I messed up. Lousy small characters.

There's a yes/no (hai/iie) option. If you pick yes he says several pages of stuff.

Dr Unne
01-19-2001 06:08 PM

The best I can come up with is 'Do you want to tell you about turning on the equipment "Ushibo"?' Or something like that. I really have no idea. Maybe it's a tutorial about the WSC, like they have in all the other FF's? (In those training/tutorial rooms, like in FF4-6 and whatnot, you know?

Collector:
01-19-2001 06:55 PM

Yeah, I figured it was one of those training rooms, since there's 4 guys and it's only in Coneria's inn.

More cool stuff:

The region northeast of Pravoka that I refer to as Finger Point is still intact.

Most enemies have a more sinister look, while townfolk are more cartoony. Bikke has lost his edge.

The canal scene is the single greatest thing I've seen on a portable.

Dr Unne looks different than the other scholars. He has big poofy hair. Thanks to me knowing what he says I can make another correction to the message from earlier:
"Soubi nitsuite [washi]ga hanashioshiyou kikitaika?" (That is the crappiest "ka" character ever. )
It makes some sense to me now.

Here's what the other three say:
"Aitemu nitsuite [washi]ga hanashioshiyou kikitaika?"
"Mahou nitsuite [washi]ga hanashioshiyou kikitaika?"
"Monsuta- nitsuite [washi]ga hanashioshiyou kikitaika?"

The tile-sliding game gives you more money depending on how fast you beat it. I think you get 100 gil every time, and I got 5000 for coming in second place. (Default 1st place is 2 minutes.)

Dr Unne
01-19-2001 07:20 PM

Yeah, that makes sense. Those other 3 guys are asking if you want to know how to about Items, Magic, and Monsters. I must've translated soubi wrong, I can't imagine what it really means.

You're already to Melmond? Geez, that was quick. At this rate you'll have the game beaten by tonight.

Freaking express.com sent me a form letter in response to my nasty email. That's the last time they're ever getting MY patronage. The punks.

You realize how horribly jealous I am of you right now, right?

The 5000 gil really sped things up. I stopped at the Earth Cave (I'm at level 8) and I'm probably done for the day. Staring at the thing for so long gave me a headache.

quote:

I figured, but whatyagonndo?

If you want, you could come on over and play it. It's only about what, 3? 400 miles?

edit: You know, I'll see about going over to a friend's house soon to record some footage and I'll try to take some pictures tomorrow.

I don't know about you guys but i'm gonna wait for the US release. Sure it may sound pathetic but nothing beats playing the game in a language you can understand.

Black Mage
01-19-2001 10:00 PM

Ebay huh? darn, why didn't I think of that!? How much did you pay? you said you paid more than Unne. Express is evil, If it doesn't come soon, I'll cancell my order. hmmm, * goes to check Ebay*

Collector
01-19-2001 11:42 PM

Just like the price Express.com wanted (they don't seen to have it listed anymore), I paid $160. *cringes at the thought* I paid more for shipping tho. I used the "Buy it Now" option. The ones I saw make it thru a regular auction went for more than $180, and ones from US sellers were well over $200.

edit: More notes...
The WSC is very uncomfortable to hold for very long. It feels like it was made for a 4 year old.
The weapons do have modifiers now. My Thief with the Wyrm Killer (Dragon Sword) ripped an iguana a new one while my Silver Sword-equipped Fighter failed to do the same.
Poison no longer bumps you to the bottom, dying still does.
The amount of HP a Potion restores outside of battle is now random.
NEW SPOILER (highlight if you don't mind): The vampire now appears as a bat on the map screen.

Final Fantasy 1

it seems like nobody else has mentioned this so i will...
WAIT FOR THE FREAKING EMULATOR REALEASE!
Even though if it comes out in US of course im getting it,
but aint the EMULATOR the answer to all of our solutions?

Dragoon
01-20-2001 07:02 PM

Sure emulaters are good and free, but it feels better if you are playing the actual game(s) and system, right?

Collector
01-20-2001 07:24 PM

Let's not forget the reason I got excited about it in the first place: it's portable! An emulator can't do that, unless I buy a laptop, but that's a lot more $$$ than just importing it.
I could also mention that playing on an emulator without owning the game is both illegal and immoral, if that sort of thing bothers you.

More notes:
If I haven't already mentioned it, you can have your name in hiragana, katakana, and Roman letters (English). There's still only 4 letters tho.
Questionable bosses are still questionable. The Wizards can still be fought an unlimited number of times and the boss music doesn't play.
Several of the new features can be turned off.

Dragoon
01-20-2001 07:29 PM
Thumbs up

Thats really, really good to know (you can turn off new features). Why the hell did they even add any of that stuff?!?!?
I can understand the extra G from the boat game, but being able to save anywhere? Gimme a break!

Collector
01-20-2001 07:40 PM

It's the nature of the thing. On a portable system it's a lot more important to be able to save. I'm glad it's there, but I'm also glad it can be turned off. (I haven't turned anything off, but I also haven't used the new save feature.) This reminds me of the GBC Dragon Warrior rerelease. The way that save works is that you can save anywhere on the world map, but you can't keep playing, and when you come back it erases it.

Auto-equipping and multiple purchasing are soooooo helpful.

Final Fantasy 1
01-20-2001 07:41 PM

I know, it is cooler to actually have the system and things, but still...emulators are caa

Collector
01-20-2001 09:13 PM

Gack, I gotta tell some more before I forget.

Trolls regenerate! I dunno, maybe they did before, but you can see them doing it now.
Lich is frickin' huge! He has different boss music too. His background is great looking too.
Weapons, armor, and items are grouped into one pool like later games. The rare items are separate.
Any character can use any item (Heal Staff for example) in battle, but only one person can use it per round.
You can change equipment during battle.
You can cast Life or Soft in battle. (I haven't done it, but there's an option to turn it off. )
I love the attention to detail. There's a big spider web near the entrance in the Melmond inn.
Lukahn looks different than the other sages.
I love the sound effects. My Black Mage's Power Staff clangs when it hits.
The Coral Sword looks like a hunk of coral.
The challenge is still there! (Dragon Warrior for GBC was horribly toned down.) I died several times on the way thru the Earth Cave, and when I did win my Black Mage was dead.

I'm guessing the NES version is harder.

One more bit of info before I go to bed:

I just beat the Ice Cave and I was a little dissapointed to see that the Eye was based on the American version's graphics. The original Japanese one was much cooler.
It got a new name too! The original Japanese name was Beholder, obviously the American name was Eye, and the new name is Evil Eye. That's the only name change I've found so far.

Based on what I've seen so far, I doubt there'd be any new way to get out. (BTW, EXIT isn't the only way. WARP works too.)

I may go T-Rex hunting right now to find out. I think the "what monsters you fight where" has been changed at least a little so you never know.

More choice viddles:
Bahamut is bigger, looks like a cross between the way he looks in the PS games and the Hiryuu in FF5.
After the class change the characters resemble the FF5 classes in general. Knight looks like a cross between Paladin Cecil and FF5's Mystic Knight. Ninja pretty much looks like the FF5 Ninja. White Wiz looks a like the Chocobo Racing White Mage but with brown hair. (The gender still isn't clear, s/he looks a little like a young Banon, but with longer hair (or did Banon have long hair?)) The Black Wiz looks like the FF5/CR Black Mage we know and love, kinda Vivi-ish. (Such fashion sense. )
Trolls aren't the only ones that regenerate, I saw were-tigers (mancat or catman, I can't remember) doing it and I think I saw something else do it too.
Sword modifiers work against you too! The Flame Sword heals the fire baddies.
[Editing note: I was wrong about this. The small screen must've fooled my eyes.]
I think Tigers seem to resemble Red XIII a little.

edit: My T-Rex hunt last night turned up nothing.

I just fought Marilith (Kary) and she's even cooler looking in person. I think she may have yet another boss theme but I couldn't quite remember Lich's.

Oh yeah, you can choose to "forget" spells you don't want anymore.

edit again:
Oh yeah, one more: The weapon and armor shops in Gaia are in one two-doored building like some in FF6.

edit once again:
Yes!!! I was fighting to get gil to buy the bottle and I found a T REX!!!! Now my enemy list can be complete.

All of that romaji made my head spinny. Well, I think I'll get Wonderswan and FF1 if it comes out in America, but for right now, I'm going to play though FF1 and get screenshots so I can put them on my website, and make useful information. Useful information is good. Now, I will go back to working on my FF1 site.

I just beat Kraken, he's big and impressive, but not as impressive as Lich or Kary.

The Sea Shrine is one big bag of wow. The whole look of the place is great. It has a whole "ancient ruins" look to it, quite impressive. The submarine ride to get there and back is great.

The conversation with Gakusha no Une (Dr Unne) is longer than before.

Sea Trolls regenerate too.

Oh yeah, this has been bothering me for a while. The "little tsu" symbol ordinarily means to double the consanant that follows it. What does it mean at the end of a word?

MogtheMogri
01-23-2001 01:07 PM

hey, i just want to know if the boss theme's are cool? and where can i find the songs in mp3's?

Alright most of this stuff doesn't really contribute to this thread but I need to clear this up. First, collecter, head to http://www.rpgamer.com Once there go to games and then FF1. Now select art, you'll eventually land on OFFICIAL square artwork of the characters of FF1. In the picture the white mage is a GIRL !!!!! Next, Insignificant Entity, how the @#!$ can you build a FF1 fan-site. I tried, but it failed miserably, it was too primitive (i used tripod.com's web-builder). Tell me where you went and how you did it, I will be forever grateful !!!!
As for FF1 WSC, I heard mad rumours of a secret FF1 second quest after you pass the game, is it true???
Do the spells have any different names ???
Lastly, can you get to LV 99 in the game, or just LV 50 ?
Thanks for your time.

Dr Unne
01-23-2001 02:17 PM

Collector, a little tsu literally means to make a stop in your voice. The "double consonant" thing is just the way it's shown in Englsih. So "hatto" is pronounced "ha- (short catch)-to". It sounds KIND of like doubling the consanant, I guess. If you had something like "ha[little tsu]" (I don't think that's a real word, but still...) , it would be pronounced kind of like "ha-!", like if you were surprised and stopped in the middle of the word. I've only ever seen a little tsu at the end of a word when it was used in some sort of exclamation or show of great emotion / surprise / whatever. It could be used other places too, I don't know.

Collector
01-23-2001 02:50 PM

I'll try to address all these issues:

The boss themes are kinda cool, but not as impressive or urgent (or some other good words) as the ones in say, 6 for example. They're all based on the regular battle theme instead of being completely new. I wish I knew if each Fiend has a different theme, but I have such a bad memory. I should've kept a save from before each one. I hope Chaos' theme is completely new, that'd be cool.

You don't see each attack, it's all the standard *wack* *wack* motion with a little "3HITS" that pops up. Hmm, I wonder why that's in English.

Despite their claims that is not official Squaresoft artwork (some of it is, but not the one with the WM in it), it's Nintendo Power artwork. And I trust Nintendo as far as I can throw them.

I highly doubt there's any kind of second quest.

All of the spells have the same name as the original Japanese version, which are vastly different from the English ones. Read my ff1jap.txt to see the differences.

I don't know how high the levels go yet, but I'll be sure to find out.

Thank you Gakusha no Une, I am indebted to you. You've explained that much better than any book or web page I've read. I finally know how to pronouce those words.

MogtheMogri
01-23-2001 07:45 PM

do they have boss music for easy 'bosses' like Garland, and the pirates?
(sorry for posting one of those stupid "redmage" questions)

Dr Unne
01-23-2001 08:02 PM

Oh yeah, thanks for those Japanese screenshots, Collector. You're my God. I now know that Unne in Japanese is pronounced "oo-nay", not "oon" like I've been pronouncing it. I've had it all wrong all these years. I'm so disappointed in myself...

Gakusha Une... that makes a bit more sense than Dr. Unne. Gakusha means "scholar". And that's what Unne is, since he just studied Lefeinish language.

Anyone want to hear a funny anecdote from my Japanese class today? I had a kanji quiz, and I completely forgot the kanji for "little sister", and the one for "freelance". So I'm like, "sensee, wasurete simaimashita" (I've completely forgotten). And sensee said "Iya, ii desu yo. Moo ichi doo benkyoo site kudasai. Nihon-zin mo wasuremasu" (Don't worry about it, just study it again. Even Japanese people forget kanji.) That's so true; my Japanese teacher ALWAYS forgets kanji. And she's a native Japanese person. It's funny that kanji are so hard to learn, even Japanese people don't remember them.

*realizes no one probably cares about his Japanese class*

...whatyagonnado.

MogtheMogri
01-23-2001 08:08 PM

I think collector should send Unne the new Unne from the WSC version. (unless he already did) and also, i don't really 'care' about your japanese class, but it is still intresting to read.

Collector
01-23-2001 09:28 PM

For the bosses: Garland, Pirates, Astos, and the Vampire all have the same boss theme. The Fiends have a theme for themselves. Questionable bosses like the Wizards and the Eye have the regular battle theme, and so do the Fiends when you fight them again. I am on my way to Chaos now so we'll see about his music.

I might record some MP3s of some of the music today. I can't guarantee how good they'll sound because the headphone jack is $40 extra.

Up until I played the Japanese version for the first time I pronounced it Yoon. (Actually, that still slips out from time to time.)

That is an interesting story. Hehe, Kanji sucks!
Nihon-zin? That romanization you use is still freakin' me out.

I'd like to send a picture of the new Unne, but I have no means of capturing screens, my camera is a piece of $@#$@!!

Another Japanese question: What does "shinden" mean? I can't find it in any of my dictionaries. The Temple of Fiends is called "kaosushinden".

Oh yeah, I kept forgetting about this. The battery consumption on the WSC is great! It runs on a single AA battery and I had 23 gameplay hours in before the low bettery icon came on, the battery ran out within an hour after that.

Dragoon
01-23-2001 10:07 PM

Hey Collector, hows the WSC's screen? Does it have backlighting or do you need to play it under some other source of light like a lamp?

Collector
01-23-2001 10:13 PM

You need a lamp, just like a GameBoy.

Dragoon
01-23-2001 10:19 PM

That sucks.
One last question. Is the sound quality good like the SNES or does it suck like the GameBoy?

Collector
01-23-2001 10:44 PM

It's better than the Gameboy but I can't judge how much better. All I can really say about it is that it's better than the original FF1 in every way, except that the sound reminds me of the Gameboy. I think it's the tiny speaker, if I had one of those headphone adaptors I'd have this baby plugged into my computer.

Dr Unne
01-23-2001 10:59 PM

shinden: Temple. Now, what does kaosu mean? That isn't in MY dictionary.

Collector
01-23-2001 11:13 PM

kaosu = chaos

I don't know if it's in any of my dictionaries. I learned it from this online dictionary originally. http://enterprise.dsi.crc.ca/cgi-bin/j-e/jis/tty/dict

While looking it up to see if it was in my dictionary I found "kappa", which is an "imaginary Japanese river-sprite." That's interesting to know.

Dr Unne
01-23-2001 11:20 PM

I asked my Japanese teacher to write my name in kanji once, and that's what she wrote for "Carper". She wrote "kappa". She said it meant "river-monster", too. Brian River-Monster. ... *hangs himself*

kaosu isn't in my dictionary at all. I looked up shinden, and it wasn't there, so I looked up "temple" in the English part, and the first word listed was "shinden". Go figure.

Anyways, if you could somehow manage to get some screenshots of the game and post them here, you'd be the super-coolest guy who ever lived, ever.

Collector
01-24-2001 12:05 AM

Hmm, interesting idea. I tried to cram together some Kanji to make my last name and the closest I could get was this: -ì˜Y‘ƒ It would mean "rascal's den" I think. My first name seems to mean "business" or "office work".

Hmm, my dictionary doesn't have shinden at all. Temple has a few other things listed for it. Chaos doesn't list kaosu either.

I'll try to get some pictures. I'll have to figure out how to get the lighting right.

Man, when did I start sucking so much at FF1? I'm at level 26 and I'm still dying on the way to Chaos. And argh, I forgot to buy Life 2.

edit: Well, not only did I make it to Chaos, but I beat him. My Ninja was dead when I got there and my Knight was the only one left (with about 130HP) at the end. Chaos does have his own music, and the ending was (as you would expect) longer than before.

edit again: I forgot about this, there is one completely new song. It plays during the opening sequence and leads into the prelude. I made an MP3 of it, but it's of low quality and is probably bigger than it needs to be.

edit yet again: I just noticed another new song. The song in the church (clinic) seems to remind me of a few other songs (mostly the prologue) but is new as far as I can tell.

still another edit: Since I can't provide you with screenshots, here's a page with a lot of them: http://www.gamers.com/game/315998/media

I just started a single Fighter party so I'll try to get those boss songs recorded when I can.

I finally fought WarMech today. He looks essentially like before but bigger and silver colored. Either he appears a lot less often or the Sorcerers on that floor are much meaner than before. I had a hell of a time finding him. When I did finally catch one he slaughtered me horribly.
Why? He now regenerates 100HP per round!!! He's much harder than before.

A very simple answer: yes.

I've noticed: Troll 9HP, SeaTroll 12HP?, CatMan ??, WarMech 100HP.

Whoa, I almost missed that ending question. No, I didn't even attempt to translate any of it. I don't think there's any new dialog in it tho.
Dr Unne
01-27-2001 06:40 PM

OK, after listening to that MP3, you are now officially the Coolest Person who Ever Lived™, Collector. If you make more MP3's from the WSC, I'm going to start a religion about you.

I have a question about the MP3... it sounds like there's waves crashing or something in the opening. Is it an opening movie or something? If so, could you describe it?

The tiny bit of the Prelude that played at the end of the MP3 was the single greatest thing I've ever heard in my life (even though it wasn't too good of quality.. but who cares?)

Collector
01-27-2001 08:03 PM

Okay, here's a description of the opening movie:

Clouds roll across the screen, the opening story is slowly shown in between pictures of the Mirage Tower, Onrac (with lightning ), and then the Earth Cave. Then it shows the 4 crystals which spin around and such, then the title screen comes on as the Prelude starts.
