A cut down, easier version was released on the US SNES as FF2, and an even easier version was made from it for Japan called FF4 Easy Type (similar to the "International" versions of later games.) In 1997 it was ported to the Playstation in Japanese and was again rereleased as part of the FF Collection in 1999. In 2001 it was released for the US Playstation as part of FF Chronicles (with a new translation and the correct number restored). In 2002, a graphically enhanced/cut down version was released in Japanese for the WonderSwan Color. Then FF4 finally made its way to Europe and Australia on the Playstation as part of FF Anthology. There is also a fan translation available for the ROM of the original Super Famicom version. [1.B] FF4 (S.Fam)->FF4 (Playstation) differences: The Playstation version is pretty much the same as the original Super Famicom version, sometimes referred to as "Hard Type". The graphics are almost identical, except that the Playstation lacks the SNES' "mode 7", so flying in the airship looks choppy. One FMV sequence has been added. A piece of it plays at the beginning of the game, and the whole thing plays after the ending. The music seems to be pretty much the same, except for delays and resets. Sound effects sound like they've been downsampled to fit on the NES. This is a more powerful system, what the hell? An option to run (in towns and dungeons) by holding the cancel button was added, like in FF7+ and other remakes. In the original version only Cain can hit Barbariccia while she's spinning, but in this one anyone can. Load times are almost nonexistant (compared to FF5&6), except for saving. Some cute loading animations have been added. There's slowdown in battle menus, and movement is a little jerky. The game puts 2 save files on one memory card slot. Unforunately, it uses up 2 slots whether you save one file or four. To make up for how long it takes to save, there's a Memo File to save to the memory instead of the memory card. A saving demonstration was also added. [1.C] FF4 (S.Fam)->FF4 (WonderSwan) differences: The WonderSwan version is also pretty much the same as the original Super Famicom version. I think the script and all names are exactly the same. This game recieved far fewer changes than the WSC versions of FF1 & FF2. The option to run (in towns and dungeons) by holding the cancel button was added, like the Playstation version. Also, the button configuration is very different because the WSC's button layout is so different. You can assign various actions the Y buttons like in the FF1 & FF2 remakes. There's also a quicksave like in the FF1, FF2, and Dragon Warrior 1 & 2 remakes. Saving this way quits the game, and loading this save file deletes it. The WonderSwan can't do music nearly as well as the SNES so a lot of the songs come off not sounding nearly as good. The song hit hardest by this is Mysidia's music. Because of the WonderSwan's small screen size some graphics had to be cut down, while others got spiffed up a little. Characters on the map screen are more colorful and nicer looking, but in battle they look the same as before. Map screen graphics are a little more colorful, and all battle backgrounds were changed some. With no "mode 7" the airship uses a stretching effect that doesn't look very good, and you can't see nearly as much of what's around you. There's also no neat twist when you come in and out of the underworld. The neat mosaic when you enter battle and walk while poisoned has been replaced by stretching and flashing respectively. The big view of what's around you from casting the Sight spell is now a full world map like those in the WSC FF1 & FF2 remakes. The graphics of the earth and moon when you travel back and forth are much better. Some spell effects are now transparent, while Zemus' Breath and Mind aren't. Some monsters had to be shrunken down to fit on the smaller screen, but most seem to be the same as before. The appearance of characters that are only partially pertrified is different. Some events happen in a slightly different place because of the smaller screen size. For example, you meet Cid for the first time a few spaces higher than before because you can't see him when you're standing in the original spot. A lot of small bugs crept in. Spellcasting rods can't target all enemies, arrows don't cause Alert/Eyes or Searchers to call for help, fight order is weird, sometimes allowing one character to fight 3 times while waiting for another character's turn, you end up in a slightly inappropriate place when you leave some towns, and you can fly over the Tower of Babil with a Black Chocobo. Targetting thru the enemies is a little more annoying, and at least one monster party (DracuLady and bats in the Magnetic Cave) won't even let you select one of the monsters at all (the DracuLady). Having a pile of arrows equipped and trying to equip more no longer just adds the two totals together. You have to unequip both and sort them to equip them all. I haven't been able to reproduce this one, but once after being confused one of my characters stayed backwords for the rest of the battle. There are a lot of other small changes. Sorting works differently. If you have a pile of 70 High Potions near the top of your bag, and a pile of 90 lower in your bag, sorting them will put 99 in the top pile. You can only pause when absolutely nothing is happening in battle. It's so hard to pause I'd gotten 95% of the way thru the game before I even found out it was possible. You can now switch between characters on the Status screen. It's harder to catch and talk to people (or Chocobos) who are running around. Just like in the Playstation version (and FF2US) you can hit Barbariccia while she's spinning. In other versions, characters stay standing if they're weak when they're floating. In this one they crouch just like they're not floating. It's more annoying to sort your spells the way you like them. Outside of battle they're in 3 columns, but in battle they're in 2. Also, you can't push up while on the top of the spell list to get to the bottom and vice versa. Spells that target everyone will hit everyone even if that character wasn't there to be targetted. In other words, in other versions if you target Cure4 on all characters while Cain is in the air and he lands before it's cast, he won't get cured. In this version he will. If you land a Black Chocobo on a Chocobo Forest you don't go directly into the forest and lose the Chocobo. There are more credits too. [1.D] FF4 (S.Fam)->FF2 (SNES) differences: This version was heavily cut down from the original. Nintendo changed the name to Final Fantasy 2 because we never got the real FF2 or FF3. The game was made generally easier and censored. Most characters had some commands removed. Commands named Dummy in the charts below are absent from this version. Most of the items that cast spells were removed, and all the different items that cure status were replaced by the one that cures everything, which is a lot cheaper and easier to find. Items named Dummy in the charts below are absent from this version. Three white spells, one caller spell, and the spell names for all the caller spells were removed. Also, the caller spell Asura which could cast the Protect/Armor spell originally, now can cast a super-strong Cure spell instead because Protect was removed. A lot of monsters are easier than in the original. They had their HP cut down or had some attacks removed. Barbariccia, for example, can't be attacked while she's spinning in the original. You need to have Cain jump to stop her. Anyone can hit her in this version. A lot of the boss monsters near the end of the game are a lot faster in the original. Some of the towns got changed around a little. Training rooms were added to most of the early towns. Most of the graphics are the same, but some were changed in Tower of Zot, Tower of Babil, and Giant of Babil to be able see better. The axe that was to drop on Rosa was replaced by a giant metal ball. Many of the secret paths in dungeons were invisible in the original but most of them show up in this version. One frame was removed from when Rosa and Cecil kiss so they only hug. I don't know why they bothered though, it always looked to me like they were kissing anyway. In addition to censorship, this translation just isn't very good. Many things are worded strangely, and the names of almost everything were changed. These can be found in the charts below. Dialog was added to the scene where Cecil takes the Mysidian crystal. Originally, they just rushed in and took it without saying a word. A dancer in Baron threw off her dress in the orignal version, but she's already wearing her dancer clothes in this version. [1.E] FF4 EZ differences: Many things were changed for this version, but I haven't played it yet to tell them to you. In the mean time, one very noticible change is that Zeromus has a completely different picture. He's a many-armed warrior instead of the hideous monster thing. For the most part though, this version is generally easier than the other versions. [1.F] FF4 (FF Chronicles) differences: The version found in FF Chronicles is based on the Japanese Playstation version, so it's the "Hard Type". All the features cut out of the US SNES FF2 are intact. This version has a new and much more accurate translation than the US FF2 version, but many names are still based on the old translation. Name changes can be found in the charts below. The separate graphic for rings in FF2US didn't make it into this version. This version also had its button configuration changed like the Anthology version of FF6 did. The Cancel and Confirm buttons are switched. [1.G] FF4 (PAL FF Anthology) differences: I don't know much of anything about this version because I've never played it and probably never will. It should be almost identical to the US FF Chronicles version, but with changes for the PAL television standard (black bars at the top and bottom, running 16.7% slower) and European market (multilingual instructions). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Section 2: Format for these charts: The first line has the name as it appears on the Chronicles/Anthology version, followed by the full name if necessary. The second line has the name as it appears in the original Super Famicom FF4, followed by its Romanji, then my translation. The third line has the name as it appears in the SNES FF2, followed by the full name if necessary. Anything named Dummy was cut out of the SNES FF2US, along with anything marked as such. I later added the version from FF Chronicles. I got most things taken care of, but I didn't have most of the monster attacks accounted for.
