BRUNEI DARUSSALAM - It's name in the local language means "The Abode Of Peace". For one Brunei Citizen like me, there is no peace.

My name is Zainuddin and was born on the 25th October 1942 in Brunei Darussalam. I was formerly a Police Officer and resigned at my own accord. My father Dato Hj. Marsal bin Maun was a former Chief Minister of Brunei.

I was in the Jewellery business as an agent for Michalls A.E. of Athens and Golden Creations of Geneva in Brunei Darussalam. As an agent, I was involved in the supply, sales of exclusive and unique jewelleries, gemstone and decorative ornaments to members of the Royal Family of Brunei. I was earning an average income of B$264,740.81 per month.

On the 20th August 1986, I was arrested by a group of Police Officers led by the then Head of Special Branch and was informed by him that my arrest was by the command of His Majesty The Sultan of Brunei Darussalam. I was secretly detained at the police Headquarters from 20th August 1986 till 12th December 1987. I was never informed the grounds for my arrest and detention. I was denied access to Lawyers and members of my family. I was never shown any Detention Order throughout the 16 months duration I was detained at Gadong Police Headquarters. I was deprived of the right of a hearing before the Committee of Review as regards to any objection as to my detention.
